Karlsruhe was founded in 1715 by the Grand Duke Karl Wilhelm on a star shaped ground plan. The centre is formed by the baroque Palace and its generous park. The Market Place has been designed by the architect "Weinbrenner". In the 6.5 m high pyramid rests the founder of the city.
In the south-east corner of the Rondellplatz stands the margraves' palace built in 1803 to 1814 by Friedrich Weinbrenner, one of the most beautiful buildings in Karlsruhe. It was commissioned by Grand Duke Karl Friedrich who had it built for the sons of his second wife, the Reichs Countess Luise Karoline von Hochberg.
The Federal Constitutional Court has always been based in Karlsruhe initially at the Prinz-Max-Palais on Karlstrasse. In 1969 it moved into its current building which is situated very near Karlsruhe Castle (between Schlossplatz and the Botanical Gardens). This building was erected between 1965 and 1969 and designed by Berlin architect Paul Baumgarten. Baumgarten intention-ally steered away from the "palace of justice" model; the open-plan construction aims to convey an impression of democratic transparency.
Karlsruhe is a town with a more than 300 years of history and surely worth a visit.
